Benefits of Forest School

l

💙 Many people ask us why we have so many boys in our classes? Well, simply put, they LOVE it!!

Most children find it difficult to maintain long periods of classroom study without becoming restless. Those who have a hard time sustaining short periods of concentration in a traditional classroom setting, tend to thrive in our mixed age outdoor classes.

Instead of punishing them for “misbehaving”, we enable them to be physically active and burn off pent up energy; offering sensory exploration and concentration breaks when needed.

Top 5 reasons that children thrive at forest and nature-based schools:

1. They instill the love of learning; children receive a child-led education in mixed age groups while being free to roam, play, and study completely outdoors.

2. They build confidence, critical thinking and independence. Children are encouraged to learn what they’re interested in – so they are curious and more confident to ask questions.

3. It’s well known that being in nature helps reduce stress, improves mental health and reduces symptoms of hyperactivity. Children’s sensory needs are being met in nature and that’s why they are less stressed and symptoms of hyperactivity are reduced.

4. They promote social and emotional development in children. Mixed age groups are the norm in both Montessori and forest schools, where the older children coach the younger ones, much like a family. Instead of competition there’s cooperation.

5. Imaginative play just explodes! A stick can become a magic wand, a log turns into a train, a tree stump can be a stage. Without the distraction of toys or the ‘busyness’ that a traditional classroom can have, children’s imaginations really go wild.
